Empowering Connecticut's Leading Energy Loan CDFI Lender

About Capital For Change

C4C has grown to be the largest full-service Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) in Connecticut. Our mission is to provide flexible, creative and responsive financial products and services that support an inclusive and sustainable economy.

Challenge:

Build an enterprise-ready loan origination platform from the ground up.

Website
A merger had forced a re-brand complete with a new logo, new mission, and new products / services. Three organizations became one and the new web site had to clearly, effectively communicate what this merger had produced. Creating effective funnels where users could find the right loan product for them based on each program's requirements posed a different set of challenges. From an abundance of tabular data to fine print, users needed to drill down quickly and find what was most important to them.
Migrating Old Data
Top of the list: import old data from an access database. Not only was the schema of the old database poorly designed, it was built upon an even older database which had inconsistencies in the data structure.
Cloud-based enterprise ready loan origination software from scratch
Capital for Change had some really unique industry-specific needs that could not be addressed with any off-the-shelf software on the market. First, we had to undergo a lengthy research and discovery phase. Workshops with staff within multiple departments allowed us to create a complete scope and learn about the process, pain points, and industry specific needs.
API Integrations
Integrations gave us the ability to speed up the workflow, remove human error, and streamline the overall process.>

Notable integrations included:
  • PSD - an online calculator that assesses the energy efficiency savings in replacing heating and cooling systems in a home.
  • Benedict Loan Servicing Software - data from the loan origination software is seamlessly exported to the loan servicing side of the operation.
  • Avantus Credit Reporting - credit reports are now being automatically pulled in and stored in a database.
  • Mantis Bug Tracker - bugs are now automatically tracked via a third-party platform in real-time for the programming team to track and fix.
  • Asana - tasks and projects are visible in Asana for all teams to be kept in the loop with two-way sync.
  • MS Excel - reports are exported to native XLSX worksheets with proper formatting and field mapping.
  • Acrobat PDF - documents are automatically filled with data and custom document packages for different loans can be assembled by system admins.
Developing a Future-Proof Design
We knew the scope of this project would keep expanding over time and new feature requests would be submitted. The architecture behind the software and databases became modular so that most new features could easily be integrated.
Securing Sensitive Data
Loan applications by nature have critical data sets that need to be secured. Putting this data in the cloud presented some challenges. We opted to spread the data across multiple servers while maintaining a real-time backup with HIPAA standards.
Dashboards For Many Personas
Energy loans are unique in that there are many individuals involved including applicants, contractors, loan origination staff, and administrators. Dashboards were created for each of these users so they could view and track the progress of each loan in regards to how it applied to their specific roles.
User Access Levels and Tracking
The loan origination department needed staff members at different levels to have access to different areas of the software. User levels and permissions were added along with meticulous logging to track activities per federal guidelines.
